The principle

The Scarsdale Method is based on a low calorie diet . Indeed, it prohibits the absorption of sugars and fats, which reduces energy intake and forces the body to tap into its reserves. It requires great rigor , because no difference is accepted if we want a really visible result.

A menu program made for 7 days, is to be repeated twice consecutively . Then follows a stabilization phase , in which previously prohibited ingredients are reintegrated into the diet. Different programs are offered according to various criteria based on taste, you choose the one that suits you!


Foods to consume and to banish

Only the foods listed in the program can be consumed . In no case can they be replaced by other ingredients. Regarding vegetables, they are not limited in quantity. For their seasoning and cooking, no fat is allowed. Lemon and vinegar are recommended instead. In case of little hungers , you can nibble carrots and celery .

Among the dishes included in a meal we find:

- vegetables such as lettuce, celery, olive, Brussels sprouts, cucumber, spinach, fine green beans
- lean, defatted meats such as chicken, turkey, tongue, lean beef, lamb ... preferably to grill
- tomatoes, grapefruit, melon and other seasonal fruits
- fish and seafood such as tuna, salmon ...
- the protein bread
- cottage cheese
- regular or decaffeinated coffee
- tea
- sweetened drinks

As for those to eliminate, it is:

- starchy foods: potatoes, pasta, rice, corn, pulses
- sugar

The Scarsdale diet is relatively short and the weight loss is fast , however that does not mean that the efforts to be provided are less, it is necessary to remain motivated throughout the two weeks.

The menu is imposed, you do not hesitate on the choice of food to buy during your races and thus save valuable time . You also find the same advantage in terms of the choice of meals. Plus, you do not need to count calories or weigh what you eat .

The -

The absence of certain foods causes deficiencies accompanied by strong fatigue . This is particularly the case of calcium since dairy products are prohibited.

The choice of dishes is limited, you may feel very quickly frustrated .

You must be very vigilant, in case of error, you risk reducing the effectiveness of the program.

The severity of the diet requires great concessions , especially at the social level, since you have to give up restaurants and often meals at your relatives (since it is difficult to bring his menu when you are invited some hand ...).

If weight loss is fast, it is also synonymous with Yoyo , so be careful when you resume a 'normal' diet.


Duration and effectiveness

As stated in the title of this article, the Scarsdale Diet is over 14 days. Regarding the weight loss, its inventor advances the figures of 500g less per day or 7 kilos at the end of the program.

Dr. Tarnower's method is deemed effective in the short term. However, he advises against prolonging it, on pain of very serious deficiencies that would have negative repercussions on your health.


Example of typical menus

Breakfast , whatever the day of the week, remains the same . It consists of coffee or tea without milk or sugar, a slice of whole or protein-enriched bread , half a grapefruit.

For lunch, for example, you can eat: two boiled eggs (or hard boiled eggs) accompanied by green beans and a slice of bread , with white cheese as a dessert. You can of course finish with a tea or coffee .

At dinner , to continue in the continuity of the lunch, you will find chicken and spinach with peppers. Once again, the absorption of a coffee or a tea is allowed.

On Tuesdays and Saturdays , however, guests can enjoy a fruit salad for lunch and coffee or tea .

There is a menu of substitution , which can replace any meal, it consists of 100 grams of cottage cheese, fruit (at will) and 3 nuts .
