The consumer association UFC-Que Choisir is expanding its database, launched in 2016, of cosmetic products containing substances deemed toxic to the body.

Deodorants, shampoos, dentifrices ... In total, more than 400 products of daily hygiene, for some sold in pharmacies and parapharmacies, are concerned.

Endocrine disruptors and allergens questioned

The association wishes once again to alert consumers to the 11 substances or families of undesirable substances present in their formulations.

BHA, BHT, butylparabens and propylparabens, endocrine disruptors, have been found in several deodorants. Allergens such as MIT (methylisothiazolinone), present in shampoos, shower gels or intimate toilet wipes, are also singled out.

Some products, including a very popular treatment for teen problem skin and sunscreen, combine several endocrine disruptors and allergens. More serious, these substances are also part of the composition of baby care (exchange cream, wipes ...).

Formulas unchanged despite controversy

"90% of the products incriminated in 2016 still contain the same undesirable substances, to the detriment of the health of consumers!", Denounced a release of UFC-Que Choisir.

In this sense, the association "urges the European public authorities to implement without delay the experts' recommendations on the withdrawal of substances, to strictly regulate labeling claims and, more generally, to propose a new definition of endocrine disruptors allowing effective removal of these harmful substances ".

It also publishes on its website a list of incriminated products, an explanatory sheet of the various harmful substances and a map to download, available to consumers.
