Why is there bad breath?

Contrary to popular belief, halitosis is not just about hygiene. The factors are multiple. Among them :

  • Poor oral hygiene : it is responsible in 85% of cases. The mouth is indeed composed of a multitude of bacteria feeding, among others, proteins. When these are degraded by bacteria, they release volatile sulfur compounds with a very strong odor. Caries, canker sores and other mouth infections can also give you bad breath.
  • A bad diet : we all know that garlic, onions or coffee are not really the ingredients that can give us very good breath. Not surprisingly, the same goes for alcohol and tobacco.
  • Gastric problems : sometimes these are caused by a bad diet, in which case it is enough to readjust his diet. The same is true for gastric acidity, which is often the cause of excessive alcohol or tobacco consumption.
  • ENT problems : people with chronic sinusitis are also likely to be affected by problems of halitosis. Pus, present in the sinuses, can flow from the nose to the mouth, leaving a strong odor on its way.
  • Dehydration : a dry mouth and decreased salivary flow are also likely to give bad breath.

What to do to stop bad breath?

Of course, having bad breath is not inevitable and simple solutions exist to get rid of it.

The base, an oral hygiene of iron! To do this brush your teeth 3 times a day, without forgetting the language. Using a dental floss also helps to remove any bacteria that lodge between the teeth, and that are unreachable with a toothbrush. We can conclude our dental routine with a small daily mouthwash.

Even more radical: we stop smoking. Our breath will be better, our teeth will be more beautiful and our heart and our lungs will be more grateful to us.

To avoid dry mouth, drink frequently, ie 1.5 to 2 liters of water per day.

At the table, we avoid some foods such as garlic, onions or raw fish.

Finally, we make an appointment at the dentist at least once a year. He remains the best person to detect any cavities or other oral problems.
