Abandonment of animals: the plague of summer

Summer is coming, holidays, hot sand, lazy days are not far! Yet 40,000 pets are abandoned every year during the summer (according to the SPA). Because it is a real scourge for the associations that the Charity Walk wanted to soften by collecting donations to finance the care of their future survivors. On the occasion of the Charity Walk, Holidog conducted a survey to test the French in terms of animal abandonment, and the finding is bitter. Indeed, although 80% of the French think they know how to react to an animal abandonment, few have the right attitude.

The people to contact in the first place are the authorities and not a veterinarian or an animal welfare association. And only 48% responded just right. Many (36%) think they should join an animal welfare association first. However, it is the authorities who can begin to prosecute, the association can help to complete all the steps thereafter.

An abandonment is sanctioned with a fine ranging from € 450 to € 100,000 with a prison sentence of up to 5 years . And only 6% of those surveyed answered just right. 30% think that giving up your animal is equivalent to a penalty of less than 450 €. Out, thanks to the fight of many associations such as the SPA or the Brigitte Bardot Foundation, the animal is recognized as being sensitive since the beginning of 2015 , which has made it possible to toughen penalties against animal abandonment. It is recalled that the average life span of a dog is 11 years and that a cat has a life expectancy of 15 to 20 years (source: Royal Canin).
